GoDaddy is the largest domain registrar in the world, and 123 Reg is the largest UK-based domain registrar.
But here’s something not many people may know: GoDaddy owns 123 Reg. They acquired it back in 2017 as part of Host Europe Group.
I don’t like either GoDaddy or 123 Reg due to their high renewal prices and annoying upselling. They don’t have the best support either.
They attract new customers with low introductory prices, but did you see their renewal prices?
Some people don’t mind the higher renewal cost, but for someone who owns several domains, it does make a significant difference.
There are many cheaper domain registrars I would consider before touching GoDaddy or 123 Reg. Spaceship and Dynadot are two good alternatives I use. Both have lower renewal prices and less aggressive upselling.
These are the renewal prices of different TLDs at each one of them:
| TLD | GoDaddy | 123 Reg | Spaceship | Dynadot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| .com | $22.99 | ~$25.14 (£18.99) | $10.18 | $10.88 |
| .net | $24.99 | ~$26.46 (£19.99) | $11.40 | $12.52 |
| .org | $23.99 | ~$26.46 (£19.99) | $11.59 | $11.64 |
| .co.uk | $12.99 | ~$17.19 (£12.99) | $5.42 | $6.20 |
| .co | $59.99 | ~$60.88 (£45.99) | $31.05 | $31.20 |
| .io | $89.99 | ~$99.28 (£74.99) | $51.75 | $53.50 |
