GoDaddy is the most popular domain registrar worldwide. IONOS is smaller by comparison, but it’s one of the biggest domain registrars in Europe.
Popular doesn’t mean good though; they’re just good at marketing.
Things I Dislike
These are the main issues I have with these two companies:
- High Renewal Prices: GoDaddy and IONOS offer discounted domain prices for the first year but their renewal prices are higher than many other registrars. What you save on registration you pay later (and a lot more) when renewing your domains and other products.
- Upselling: Both GoDaddy and IONOS have pushy upselling. It gets annoying when you just want to make a quick domain purchase.
- Support Quality: If you don’t mind templated or automated support answers, GoDaddy and IONOS may work for you, but if you want an attentive support service, look elsewhere.
Better Alternatives I Use for Domain Registration
I don’t personally use GoDaddy or IONOS anymore. Instead, I register my domains with Spaceship and Namecheap, plus a few other registrars I use occasionally.
If you want the cheapest alternative, go with Spaceship. You’ll save a lot of money on domain renewals compared to GoDaddy and IONOS. They have free WHOIS privacy for TLDs that allow privacy.
Domain Renewal Price Comparison
I’m not comparing any promo prices or one-off discounts because those are usually front and center. Renewal prices are usually overlooked, so here’s a comparison of the renewal prices for different TLDs on GoDaddy vs. IONOS vs. Namecheap vs. Spaceship.
| TLD | GoDaddy | IONOS | Namecheap | Spaceship |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| .com | $22.99 | $20.00 | $18.48 | $9.98 |
| .net | $24.99 | $20.00 | $18.58 | $11.20 |
| .org | $23.99 | $20.00 | $18.98 | $11.39 |
| .co | $59.99 | $48.00 | $45.48 | $31.05 |
| .io | $89.99 | $90.00 | $75.98 | $51.75 |
