Why I Wouldn’t Buy Domains from Google Anymore

Google no longer sells domains

Google used to offer domain registration services via Google Domains, but they shut it down a few years ago after Squarespace acquired their domain business.

You can’t buy domain names from Google anymore, at least not directly.

Some Google services, like Workspace, still allow you to registrar a domain, but they just function as a reseller of Squarespace. So the registrar will actually be Squarespace but your domain will be managed at Google.

I don’t recommend doing that. It’s better to get the domain from a separate registrar so you can deal directly with them.

I’ve heard stories about users who had problems recovering expired domains from Google because they kept telling them to contact the registrar (Squarespace) and the latter kept referring them back to Google, so they got stuck in a loop.

There are better domain registrars than Google/Squarespace…

Spaceship and NameCheap are the ones I use most often. Spaceship has lower renewal prices. NameCheap keeps increasing their renewal prices like once or twice a year, but they are cheaper than Squarespace for many TLDs.
